A leading Liberal Democrat Councillor has accused the Labour Party in Fife of deceiving the public over their position on the tolls across the Forth Road Bridge. Councillor Tony Martin, who is the Party's Transport Spokesman, said that the Labour Party give the impression that they have the backing of their Leader Jack McConnell when the opposite is true.
Councillor Martin, speaking in advance of the Forth Estuary Transport Authority meeting on Monday, said:
"The Labour Party in Fife are making a lot of noise about the tolls on the Forth and are giving the impression that they have Jack McConnell's backing. But Jack McConnell does not support abolishing the tolls on the Forth because he knows that would create absolute gridlock in Fife. Commuters would spend an extra hour in their cars every day of the week. Instead of queues starting at Rosyth they would start at Halbeath - every morning. That's five miles of extra queuing every day.
"The Labour Party in Fife are being deceitful. They are panicking because of their dramatic by-election loss to the Lib Dems last month.
"What we need now that the bridge board's crazy £4 toll proposals have been rejected is to develop a sustainable transport strategy for the east coast. That strategy must include new bus services for people who travel to work in West Lothian, west Edinburgh, Midlothian and Leith. Those measures will reduce congestion. Tackling congestion is the priority now because it has such a damaging effect on business, tourism and the quality of life in Fife."
