Fife's newest MP, Willie Rennie, has challenged Fife NHS Board to review its plans for Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline. After only a week in the job following his dramatic by-election win, Mr Rennie met with NHS officials at their offices in Kirkcaldy (Tuesday 21st February).
"The provision of services from Queen Margaret Hospital was one of the top concerns of voters in Dunfermline and West Fife. I today challenged the Chairman and Chief Executive to review their plans for the hospital."
"Following the publication of the Scottish Executive's Kerr report last year it is vital that NHS Fife review their plans to ensure they are consistent with the Executive's aims. That report said that services should be delivered as locally as possible and I want to make sure that Fife NHS Board adhere to that principle."
"Some senior clinicians have made it known that inpatient acute surgery could take place at Queen Margaret. I want to explore that proposal thoroughly and plan to call on independent experts to give advice."
"I am also interested in the proposal, which I aired during the election, that the spare capacity at Queen Margaret Hospital could be used for an east coast waiting times unit for orthopaedics i.e. hip replacements etc. The former private HCI Hospital in Clydebank provides such a service and I want to explore the possibilities for Queen Margaret."
"I am not satisfied with the NHS Fife plans for Queen Margaret as they stand and will be pressing for changes."
