Lib Dem by-election candidate Willie Rennie has welcomed news of major new investment for Longannet which will safeguard jobs at the Fife power station.
Scottish Power today confirmed that it will spend around £170million on the installation of new 'flue gas desulphurisation' technology - which will use seawater to reduce the level of air pollution produced by the plant.
Speaking today, Willie Rennie said:
"This is good news for everyone employed at Longannet. This major new investment has safeguarded more than 300 current jobs and will create an additional 300 during the construction period.
"This new technology will help to reduce the level of air pollution around the power station. We need a responsible approach to energy provision and this is a step in the right direction.
"Local people agree with the tough stance that the Liberal Democrats have taken on nuclear power. There is huge opposition to Labour's plans to commission a whole new generation of nuclear power stations.
"Scotland has the best renewable energy resources in Europe and Liberal Democrat ministers have set ambitious targets for its development here. Until those targets can be met stations such as Longannet will continue to have a role in our energy provision."
Notes:
Scottish Power has announced that it will be opting its 2,304MW Longannet Power Station into the Large Combustion Plant Directive ("LCPD"), removing restrictions that would otherwise have forced its closure by 2015.
Flue Gas Desulphurisation ("FGD") will be installed at Longannet using seawater-based FGD technology to remove sulphur dioxide from the boiler flue gases.
