New industries are Fife's economic future

January 27, 2006 5:01 PM

Willie Rennie, Liberal Democrat candidate in the Dunfermline and West Fife by-election, believes that the way forward for Fife's economy lies in attracting more high value jobs to the area.

Speaking at the end of the week when 700 local jobs have been lost, Willie Rennie called for a united effort to fight for new investment and fresh opportunities for the Fife workforce.

Willie Rennie said:

"The issue of jobs and the strength of our local economy has never been more important.

"It is vital that as much positive support is given to all those affected by the Lexmark closure at this time. I am delighted that Lib Dem Enterprise Minister Nicol Stephen has taken immediate action to get practical help to the former employees.

"After the shock news of earlier this week, it is important to focus on Fife's future. We need to fight for new investment and jobs for this area.

"In today's economy, manufacturing remains a major employer but we must be realistic - we simply cannot compete with the wages paid in the emerging markets of India and China.

"We need to attract more high value jobs in areas such as research and development and the financial services - which are rapidly expanding sectors within the Scottish economy.

"Dunfermline and West Fife is ideally suited to take advantage of these fast growing markets. I am determined that this area gets the support it needs to make the most of these fresh opportunities."
