Nicol Stephen and Ming Campbell join Willie Rennie on the Dunfermline campaign trail

Scottish Deputy First Minister Nicol Stephen and Acting Lib Dem leader Ming Campbell have thrown their weight behind Willie Rennie's Dunfermline campaign

The Liberal Democrats stepped up their campaign in the Dunfermline and West Fife by-election today with the party's Scottish and UK leaders joining candidate Willie Rennie for the official campaign launch.

Nicol Stephen MSP, Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, and Sir Menzies Campbell MP, Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats, joined Willie Rennie in Dunfermline city centre on a lunchtime visit.

They met voters and collected more signatures for Willie Rennie's major petition urging the Labour controlled FETA (Forth Estuary Transport Authority) board to scrap its proposals for a huge toll hike to cross the Forth Bridge.

Willie Rennie said:

"My campaign has really got off to a flying start, with huge local support for my petition to force a rethink of the unfair and unnecessary toll hikes proposed by the Labour controlled FETA board.

"The clear message that I am getting on the doorsteps is that local people feel let down by Labour and that it is time for a change.

"More and more people are telling me that they will be voting Liberal Democrat because they agree with our priorities for the people of Dunfermline and West Fife.

"We want new secondary schools for Dunfermline and the West Fife villages, a commitment to strengthen our local health services and action to transform Dunfermline city centre which the Labour run council have neglected for too long.

"It is also vital that we keep up the pressure on FETA on the tolls issue. Whilst Labour is in disarray on this matter, the local Lib Dem campaign urging a rethink continues to gather momentum and I am determined to ensure that the views of local people are not ignored."

Nicol Stephen, Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, said:

"Willie Rennie is an excellent local choice and will be a powerful voice for the people of Dunfermline and West Fife.

"We got a really positive reaction out and about in Dunfermline and there is clearly a groundswell of support for Willie Rennie in the area."

Sir Menzies Campbell, Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats, added:

"Willie Rennie is the clear challenger to Tony Blair's Labour candidate in Dunfermline and West Fife.

"The Liberal Democrats have a strong track record when it comes to winning by-elections, taking seats across the country with swings of up to 35%. Willie Rennie needs only a 14% swing to win here."
