Willie Rennie, the Liberal Democrat candidate in the Dunfermline and West Fife by-election, has written to the Labour candidate, Catherine Stihler, challenging her to join local people in supporting his petition against the proposed toll hike.
Willie Rennie is at the forefront of local efforts to force the Labour controlled FETA (Forth Estuary Transport Authority) board to abandon its planned increase. His petition to the authority urging a rethink has already got the backing of many local people, with more and more signatures being gathered each day.
Commenting on the challenge, Willie Rennie said:
"The Labour candidate can make her position on this matter clear simply by signing our petition. If she is not going to join local people in backing the established Lib Dem campaign urging a rethink then she must explain why.
"FETA is clearly under pressure as a result of our campaign on this issue. We need to build on this momentum and really drive home the message that local people are simply not prepared to put up with this toll increase.
"I would hope that the Labour candidate would learn from the mistakes of Gordon Brown. His crude attempt to dampen local fury at the Labour controlled Feta plans by announcing that the proposed hike had been scrapped - which everyone knows is not the case - suggests that Labour are in disarray over this issue.
"The Labour candidate has a clear opportunity to avoid a similar embarrassment by signing the Lib Dem petition.
"I look forward to hearing back from Catherine Stihler and await her response with interest."
