The Scottish Executive is reviewing local government finance in Scotland, and the Liberal Democrats are pushing it to say that Council Tax should be abolished.
Lib Dems believe that a person should contribute to local services according to their ability to pay. That ís why they propose a local income tax instead.
The Council Tax takes no account of people's ability to pay. A nurse or pensioner can pay more than a multi-millionaire. Under a fairer Local Income Tax, two thirds of pensioners would pay nothing. Half of Scottish households would be over £450 a year better off.
A Local Income Tax would be collected with national income tax - wasting less money on bureaucracy.
"Already hundreds of people have signed the Lib Dem petition. I hope more will do so now" said Councillor Elizabeth Riches, Leader of the Lib Dems on Fife Council.
