Axe the Tax

December 13, 2005 3:41 PM

Axe Council Tax GraphicThe Scottish Executive is reviewing local government finance in Scotland, and the Liberal Democrats are pushing it to say that Council Tax should be abolished.

Lib Dems believe that a person should contribute to local services according to their ability to pay. That ís why they propose a local income tax instead.

The Council Tax takes no account of people's ability to pay. A nurse or pensioner can pay more than a multi-millionaire. Under a fairer Local Income Tax, two thirds of pensioners would pay nothing. Half of Scottish households would be over £450 a year better off.

A Local Income Tax would be collected with national income tax - wasting less money on bureaucracy.

"Already hundreds of people have signed the Lib Dem petition. I hope more will do so now" said Councillor Elizabeth Riches, Leader of the Lib Dems on Fife Council.
